About us

With a need to create better, stronger and more reliable water infrastructure services throughout the wider districts, Wairarapa Tararua Waters Ltd was established.

Rising water services costs across the country, aging infrastructure and historical underinvestment in asset renewals and maintenance have combined and created a situation that requires attention, collaboration between councils and a larger investment than what one council could handle on its own.

The Government set clear expectations and deadlines for its Local Water Done Well reform, addressing New Zealand’s long-standing water infrastructure challenges and asking district councils around the country to consult with its residents and form a plan of delivery – for the most part, district councils around the country are collaborating with their neighbours to create council-owned organisations.

While it’s a big change for councils, it brings a lot of positive gains including necessary infrastructure investment, and services delivered in a financially sustainable way long into the future.

With our goal to be operational before or on 1 July 2027, we are well underway with the establishment of your new water company. Not much should change for you for your water supply – aside from solid improvements over time, and you will now receive your quarterly water bill from us instead of your district council.

We look forward to servicing the wider districts of Wairarapa, Tararua, Carterton and Masterton and the nearly 25,000 water connections within it from July 2027.
