About us

Wairarapa Tararua Water is being established to provide better, stronger and more reliable water infrastructure services throughout the region.

Rising water services costs across the country, aging infrastructure and historical underinvestment in asset renewals and maintenance have created a situation that requires attention. Solving these problems requires collaboration between Councils and a larger investment than one Council could handle on its own – that’s why we’re establishing this new regional company.

The Government set clear expectations and deadlines for its Local Water Done Well reform, asking Councils around the country to consult with their residents on a plan for the future delivery of water services – many other Councils around the country are taking the same approach we are and collaborating with their neighbours to create new council-owned water organisations.

While it’s a big change for Councils and communities, there are real benefits for the region. The change will mean

  • more affordable and resilient water services

  • operational efficiency resulting from a single entity planning, contracting and delivering infrastructure works across the region

  • regional employment opportunities from a larger, locally based infrastructure provider and

  • increased access to finance to enable delivery of necessary investment programmes.

We will be operational by 1 July 2027 and are well underway with the establishment of your new water company. Until then your water services will continue to be delivered by your local Council.

We look forward to serving the Wairarapa Tararua region and its communities from July 2027.
